Haines is pleased to share the acquisition of David Maisel's Open Pit Copper Mine, Pima, Arizona (1985) by the National Gallery of Art, part of a major gift of 166 photographs from the UBS Art Collection. Assembled in the 1990s by John Szarkowski, a renowned photographer and former director of the department of photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, this collection features diverse artists from the United States and Latin America. Maisel's photograph enhances the National Gallery's ability to tell comprehensive and inclusive stories about America's relationship with the land from the 1860s to the 1990s, often casting a critical eye on the human impact on the landscape.
